Silk vs Satin Pillowcase: How to Tell Real Silk

Search for a silk pillowcase in India and you'll find "silk" pillowcases at ₹500 and at ₹4,000. They are not the same thing. Most of the cheap ones are satin, and satin is usually polyester. Here's what the difference means for your skin and hair, and how to tell which one you're holding.

Silk Is a Fibre. Satin Is a Weave.

This is the source of most of the confusion. Silk is a natural protein fibre spun by silkworms. Mulberry silk, the finest kind, comes from silkworms fed only on mulberry leaves, which gives long, smooth, even fibres.

Satin is a way of weaving: threads float over several others to make a smooth, glossy face. You can weave satin from silk (silk charmeuse, which is what a good silk pillowcase is), but most satin pillowcases are woven from polyester. They look shiny. They are plastic.

What the Difference Means When You Sleep

  • Breathability. Silk is a natural fibre that lets air and moisture move. Polyester satin traps heat, which is why a satin pillowcase can feel clammy on a warm night.
  • Your skincare. Both are smoother than cotton, but polyester can feel slippery and sticky at once, and it does nothing for skin beyond being smooth. Silk absorbs far less of your night cream than cotton and stays comfortable against the face.
  • Your hair. Both reduce friction compared with cotton. Silk does it without the static that polyester can build up, which matters for fine or frizz-prone hair.
  • How long it lasts. Good mulberry silk at a decent weight lasts for years with gentle care. Cheap satin snags, pills and loses its sheen.

Five Ways to Tell Real Silk

  1. Read the label exactly. Look for "100% mulberry silk". "Silky", "satin", "silk-feel" and "ice silk" all mean it isn't.
  2. Look for the momme. Real silk is sold by weight in momme (19, 22, 25). A seller who can't tell you the momme is usually not selling silk. Here's what momme means.
  3. Check both sides. Many "silk" pillowcases are silk on the face and cotton or polyester on the back. Turn it over.
  4. Feel the temperature. Hold it for a few seconds. Silk warms to your hand. Polyester stays slick and slightly cool.
  5. Be realistic about price. Pure mulberry silk is expensive to make. A pillowcase sold for a few hundred rupees is almost certainly not silk.

The traditional proof is a burn test on a loose thread: silk burns slowly, smells like burnt hair and leaves a soft ash that crumbles; polyester melts into a hard bead and smells of plastic. Only try this on a stray thread, away from anything flammable.

Is Satin Ever the Right Choice?

If you mainly want something smoother than cotton for a short trip or a child who will lose it, a satin pillowcase is better than nothing. If you want a pillowcase that is breathable, comfortable all night and lasts, choose real silk.

FAQs

Is a satin pillowcase as good as silk?

No. Polyester satin is smoother than cotton but doesn't breathe like silk and wears out faster.

What is charmeuse?

Charmeuse is a satin weave made from silk. A good silk pillowcase is silk charmeuse: glossy on the face, matte on the back.

Can a silk pillowcase be machine washed?

Yes, in a mesh bag on a cold delicate cycle. Hand washing in cool water below 30°C is gentler. See our silk care guide.
