How to Choose Hotel Bed Sheets for Your Home

Three things determine whether a sheet feels like a hotel bed. Weave, fabric and thread count — in that order.

Weave comes first

Percale is a one-over-one-under weave. Sateen is four-over-one-under, which puts more thread on the surface and gives a softer hand with a subtle sheen. Both are good fabrics, but only one is hotel bedding.

Hotels choose percale because it sleeps cool, holds a crisp finish, and improves rather than degrades under constant washing. Sateen is the more indulgent fabric for an air-conditioned bedroom, but it is not what you slept on in the hotel. If a brand sells you sateen as hotel bedding, they are describing a look rather than a specification.

Fabric

Look for long-staple cotton. The length of the fibre matters more than the country it came from — longer fibres spin into finer, stronger yarn with fewer loose ends, so the fabric pills less and holds its finish through many more washes. A 400 thread count sheet in long-staple cotton will outlast a higher-count sheet in short-staple cotton, and feel better doing it.

Thread count

Higher is not automatically better. Hotel specification sits between 300 and 500, which is where softness, breathability and durability balance. Beyond that, fabric traps more heat and wears faster under frequent laundering. Our hotel range is 400 TC percale for exactly this reason.

Layers

The layered look of a hotel bed is method, not luck. Start with a mattress protector, then a fitted sheet, then a flat sheet folded back at the head. Add a duvet in its cover, then euro shams standing at the back with sleeping pillows in front. A throw across the foot finishes it.

Your bedding requires proper care to keep it clean, fresh and inviting. Here is how to maintain that hotel finish at home.

Washing and drying

Wash on a gentle cycle in cold or warm water with a mild detergent. Skip fabric conditioners — they coat the fibres and reduce breathability, which is the opposite of what percale is for. Tumble dry on low and remove promptly to avoid creasing.

Stain removal

Treat stains immediately. For most, a solution of vinegar and baking soda works well. For tougher marks, pre-treat the area with a gentle stain remover before washing.

Ironing and folding

That crisp hotel finish comes from a steamer or a light iron while the fabric is slightly damp. Fold neatly to keep sheets fresh and crease-free until the next use.
